Botagoz ToleshExploring Feminine Identity, Tradition, and Renewal

The exhibition marks the culmination of Botagoz Tolesh’s profound exploration of feminine identity, tradition, and renewal. Rooted in the cultural fabric of Kazakhstan, her art articulates a visual language that is at once intimate and universal — one that speaks to resilience, grace, and transformation.

Tolesh’s practice delves deeply into the complex intersection of womanhood and heritage, viewing feminism not as opposition to tradition, but as its natural evolution. Her works reveal the enduring strength and quiet power of Kazakh women — women who are not confined by custom, but who reinterpret it, shaping a modern identity that bridges past and future. In her vision, tradition and progress are not adversaries, but intertwined forces that enrich and redefine one another, giving rise to a new narrative of the contemporary Kazakh woman.

In Tolesh’s hands, the tapestry becomes more than a medium — it is a vessel for life itself. Threads turn into symbols of movement, renewal, and emotional depth. Her woven compositions invite reflection; they whisper of both the visible world and the inner landscapes of memory and desire.

Born in Almaty and based in Astana, Botagoz Tolesh often centers her work around birds — enduring emblems of freedom and spirit. Within her woven worlds, these birds become metaphors for the inner yearning to transcend fear and limitation, expressing a woman’s quiet rebellion and boundless grace.

Tolesh’s refined palette of soft pastels serves as a delicate balance between strength and tenderness — the warrior and the lover, the provocative and the poetic. Her art ultimately stands as a lyrical meditation on freedom, identity, and the eternal rhythm of becoming.

Sandugash Beisenbekova & Shyraq Studio

Installation: Reflections of Sacrifice

In Reflections of Sacrifice, Sandugash Beisenbekova and the artisans of ShyraQ Studio create a deeply intimate and politically resonant installation — one that transforms material into memory, and craft into testimony. Comprising seven prayer rugs, each crowned with a hollow foil sculpture, the work unfolds as a quiet yet devastating meditation on loss, resilience, and inherited trauma.

Each rug marks the age of the artist Aknur’s grandmother’s sister — a child left behind in Afghanistan during a desperate exchange for the very rugs that would later sustain her family’s survival. These woven surfaces, intricately hand-crafted by the women of ShyraQ, are more than artifacts of beauty; they are sites of remembrance, bearing witness to a moment suspended between life and necessity — a moment shaped by the harrowing history of the Kazakh famine and exile of the 1930s.

The foil sculptures that rest upon each rug evoke the duality of presence and absence. Their reflective surfaces — gleaming yet hollow — recall the way women have often been seen: admired as forms, but unheard as voices. Beisenbekova’s choice of material is deliberate; the foil’s fragility and sheen mirror a cultural condition in which beauty and silence coexist uneasily. These figures do not confront — they reflect — forcing the viewer to see themselves in the void of what has been erased.

Beneath them, the prayer rugs anchor the installation in both the spiritual and domestic realms. They reference the ancestral threads of devotion, craft, and continuity that sustained women through historical rupture. The juxtaposition of metal and textile — the industrial and the handmade — becomes a dialogue between endurance and erasure, faith and survival.

Reflections of Sacrifice asks us to reckon with the unseen cost of endurance. It is an act of remembrance, but also of reclamation — of womanhood, of craft, of story. Through ShyraQ Studio, a collective of fifteen artisans based in the Turkistan region, Beisenbekova bridges personal memory and collective history, transforming generational pain into a luminous and enduring form of resilience.
